A few years ago, Tom Kapusta walked in to the shop and introduced himself. He is a (semi) retired machinist from the northeast, and he worked with Tim Borski to design a reel for use in the Keys. Our involvement with Kapusta has spanned a few years now, and we are proud to be working with a truly independent reelmaker. In 2013, we sponsored the Cuda Bowl with a Kapusta reel for the big fish on fly category, and when Nathaniel won it he promptly rigged it and took it fishing. Throughout its tenure, the reel has performed beautifully. Tom’s reel is a cork drag drawbar reel, though with some real differences. Primarily, they can be made in any color, including a beautiful type III matte black finish that gives the aluminum a seriously classy looking suit of armor. Additionally, the porting and design options (including things like arbor size, diameter, width, and handle placement that are typically not modified in a custom reel). If you can imagine it, Tom can build it. As with any custom process, the best thing to do is call or email the shop if you’re interested in learning more.
