Offshore yesterday
Offshore yesterday
Yesterday I fished offshore with Captain Rob Nevius and Kathryn. We left later in the day, hoping to catch the evening blackfin/bonita/skipjack bite and get Kathryn her first tuna on fly. Joining us was Don, a friend of Rob’s.
We found bait, and though it took us longer than we had hoped to fill the livewell we still had plenty of time left when we got out to the spot.
We began by trolling, and caught a skipjack and a tiny (also quite cute) blackfin, the smallest I’ve seen. In the spirit of catching things outside of their typical size range, I also caught the largest blue runner I’d ever seen on a jig.
Our three drifts in hopes of crashing tunas brought a few fish into our bait but none close enough to catch on a fly. I caught one on a pilchard and a spinning rod for dinner, as did Don.
When the bait ran out we headed home.
More to come, I’m trying to get John to take me out for two days next week.
