tarpon on the flats
tarpon on the flats
It’s officially great tarpon fishing in the lower Keys. There are many fish in the backcountry, and reports are beginning to materialize of fish swimming in schools on the ocean as well. For fishing in March, this is truly amazing!
As for size, the fish in the back are on average smaller than typical, with a great many fish in the 30-50 lb range. This is not to say that there aren’t still some large fish out there, but who among us can’t say that sometimes a tarpon is great; no matter the size.
Blacktip sharks abound also, along with jacks, permit, bonefish, and the rest of the flats-pack.
I am scheduled to fish on Friday with Doug Kilpatrick, when the weather is forecasted to take a turn towards rain and cloud cover.
As always I will keep you posted.
Tight lines,
