A mystery

On my way back through Northwest channel today, I stopped to see a large mola-mola (ocean sunfish) that seemed to be in some trouble. We pulled up alongside the fish, and grabbed it’s dorsal fin. A closer look revealed a square hole, obviously made with some sort of sharp blade, cut through the dorsal fin. There was literally a hole through this fish, and it was apparent to me that it was man made. What would possess someone to cut a hole through such a gentle and obviously harmless creature?
I simply can’t wrap my brain around it. My only hope is that there is some element to this that I’m missing– some graduate student who removed a terrible parasite properly, some starving castaway who had to eat and took what they had to in order to survive.
The wound was fresh, and likely done today. The mola mola was last seen near the tower flats, sadly looking sick and not long for this world.
Shark fishing was fun, as always, and a large cobia made an appearance. The weather is beautiul, and I am looking forward to a great ‘cuda bowl this weekend.
