Fishing Reports
The fishing reports page has been a favorite for a while now, and we try to keep it updated regularly. For the most part, it’s a blog of Nathaniel Linville and the fishing he does with guides that he’s lucky enough to fish with though occasionally we’ll post a guest report from one of our friends on a trip they took. Good days, bad days, success and failure, they’re all here. Photos accompany the report when they’re available, but if you want straight photos the best place to look is the photo gallery.
The last two days I fished with Captain Doug Kilpatrick. On the first day we fished alone with the 6, and on the second we were joined by Dave Dalu. If you read these reports, you’re familiar with Dave’s skills and I need not bring them up. If you’re not, suffice to say that he’s…
Read MoreYesterday I fished with Captain Bobby Paulson. I’ve known Bobby for a number of years now, and we’ve been trying to get out together for a while, but this was the first time I’ve had the pleasure of spending the day on the water with him. Our weather was marginal (it was raining on my…
Read MoreCaptain Bill Houze told me about a few days of fishing he had with Carlos Cortez. They caught six permit on fly in two days, and hooked a few more. All the inspiration in the world to fish with good guides and be a good angler: The Angling Company would like to congratulate both Captain…
Read MoreLast Sunday I had the pleasure of fishing with Captain Bryan “Bear” Holeman and Kathryn Vallilee, who works in the shop. Our target was shark, specifically, to let Kathryn get an idea of fighting big animals with a fly rod. If you read these reports you know that sharks feature often and are one of…
Read MoreOn Monday and Tuesday I fished offshore with RT and Fitz Coker. Joining us each day was Captain Jared Cyr, and on the first day we enjoyed the fine company of Captain Doug Kilpatrick and his father, Jerry. Typically, with this many people on a boat, there is at least one personality that I’d rather…

Read MoreIt’s been a long break on these reports, since I haven’t been fishing. Also there has been a refractory period after the big battle with Steve a few weeks ago. The last three days I was scheduled to fish the Cuda Bowl with Aaron Snell–our third year in the tournament. The first day, our prefish…
Read MoreLast Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday I fished with Steve Huff. If you keep up with the reports, you may recall the days I had with him last year netted us a long battle (2 hours) with a large fish on 6, though the outcome of that was a broken hook. This year Aaron was unable…
Read MoreLast night I fished with my friend Henrik for baby tarpon, and while the fish were being extremely testy we managed to hook four. One was released and the others managed to spit the hook before they jumped. On Sunday I’m driving up to Everglades City for three days (dependent on the weather, though the…
Read MoreOn Thursday I fished from Miami with my good friend Mike Driscoll and Captain Joe Rodriguez. While we put this day on the calendar months ago, it turned out to be a great call: the weather was warm and visibility was good. Our discussion about what to do with this day soon focused on tarpon;…
Read MoreLast week I had the pleasure of joining Alex Spiros and his father Jim for a day of fly fishing with Aaron Snell. Alex had worked on his casting and tied some flies with me the day before, and we went out to give his new skills some practice. Alex caught a big jack crevalle…

Read MoreMerry Christmas. I just returned to the shop from a great lunch with my BFF Fitz Coker and Dotty Ballantyne, which was great. The cold of the last few days has subsided, and the fishing is bound to get great in no time. As long as the water heats up, there should be plenty of…
Read More…is a cold front. relatively anti-climactic, but it bodes well for the future of life (both human and fish) on the planet. It may, however, make the fishing in the next few days less than phenomenal. More to come when next I’m out. nathaniel
Read MoreYesterday I fished with Captain Justin Rea in his Yellowfin bay boat. Joining us was Diego Rouylle. Neither of these guys needs much of an introduction, and I obviously couldn’t be more pleased to spend a day on the water with two fisherman of their caliber. Our target was blackfin tuna and the attendant offshore…
Read MoreOur fun with the hammerhead continued: Diego got in on the action as well, feeding the great animal a bonita after these photos were taken. While we caught other stuff (including a large jack crevalle on a conventional rod, my back still hurts!), the hammerhead was far and away the coolest part of the day,…
Read MoreI haven’t been fishing since last week’s shark trip. While satisfying at the time, I’m about ready to get out there once again. I had an opportunity to fish today with Justin Rea offshore for blackfin tuna, though I was unable to attend due to obligations at the shop. We have tentatively planned to get…
Read MoreLast Wednesday I fished with Captain Mike Gorton. I was looking forward to fishing out of Mike’s boat, a custom canoe that he built to fish down here. We had a great time, and I enjoyed fishing out of a different boat. Our target was redfish, and even though it was overcast and windy decided…
Read MoreMonday I fished for sharks with Aaron Snell. This was our third trip in three weeks, and if you keep up with the reports you know that the last two trips had been difficult. We left at the same time, and discussed returning to the same area where we had fished the weeks before. Our…
Read MoreHappy Thanksgiving. On the flats, currently, there is much wind. So much wind. And while it’s doable, I’ve really only heard reports about some large bonefish for those brave (and lucky) enough to find them. There have been some permit around, though the best thing going at the moment is the large jack crevalle on…
