Fishing Reports
The fishing reports page has been a favorite for a while now, and we try to keep it updated regularly. For the most part, it’s a blog of Nathaniel Linville and the fishing he does with guides that he’s lucky enough to fish with though occasionally we’ll post a guest report from one of our friends on a trip they took. Good days, bad days, success and failure, they’re all here. Photos accompany the report when they’re available, but if you want straight photos the best place to look is the photo gallery.
Earlier this week, I fished for a day as the guest of Greg Kelly and Michael Pollack. Greg and I have become permit buddies over the last few months, and after talking about the life cycle of a crab through long text message exchanges and over dinner it was high time to get out and…
Read MoreYesterday was thanksgiving, and as I had the day off and no plans until 4 Ian and I hatched a plan to get out on the water for the first part of the day. We started off by looking for permit, though in short order it became clear that this was not meant to be.…
Read MoreLast week, before the Sugarloaf Showdown, I went up to Everglades City to fish with Steve Huff. Again, we were in pursuit of the six pound tippet tarpon record, and as our third member we had Chad Huff, whom I had only met briefly the week prior at the IGFA Hall of Fame dinner. The…
Read MoreWhen Kat and I were married last November, Fitz Coker was my best man. At that time, he gifted Kat and myself a trip with him and Dotty to New Orleans the following November, which happened upon us this year. After hearing about this fishery from people for a while now, and after a year…
Read MoreJust before Kat and I left for New Orleans with Fitz and Dotty, I had an opportunity to spend the day on Doug Kilpatrick’s skiff as a guest of Ted Margo. We intended to look for mostly permit, though our plan was to fish for anything that came along. Ted…
Read MoreAt the end of last month, I fished a day as the guest of Lawson Stiff and John O’Hearn. Our plan was to fish for permit, and it was a great day to do just that. We started off looking but not finding, and when the tide got right the fish appeared where we hoped…
Read MoreWe left off after the third day of fishing, in which Kat got her first fish of the trip. On the fourth day, Kat fished solo with Scully and Michael and I were on Eworth’s boat. For us all, the fishing was very tough. The fish didn’t seem to be where we thought they would.…
Read MoreAfter the Superfly, Kathryn and I took a day to pack up the rest of our gear and headed out of town. Our destination was Belize, which has become an annual thing at this point, and our plan was to fish with our good friend Eworth Garbutt. This year, since we brought Michael Hetzel along…
Read MoreBefore Kat and I left for Belize with Michael Hetzel, I fished in the Superfly with Aaron Snell. Our plan was to prefish for a day, then get to it in the event proper. With the upcoming trip to Belize looming in the background, not to mention an upcoming house purchase (all excuses, I hope,…
Read MoreEarly in the year, I put together three days at the end of August with John O’Hearn. After that, Frankie Marion and I hatched a plan to try to get some permit bites on slo-mo motion capture, and he flew down for the days with John and me. Ian Slater was brought in to the…
Read MoreLast week, finally, Dave Skok came to town. There were a lot of reasons for this trip, not the least of which was for me to fish with Dave; the last time we fished together was on a trip to Costa Rica, which was full of sailfish and many fun times but at this point…
Read MoreLast week I went out for a day with Simon Becker and my friend Sean Morton. We had no set plan except to have fun and ply our craft on the water, and met early in the morning to get started. Early on, Simon had us looking for tarpon. We didn’t find any, and as…
Read MoreLast Sunday and Monday, I fished with John O’Hearn for two days. We were supposed to be joined by Dave Dalu for the second day, though this unfortunately did not happen. The first day we were joined by Drew Delashmit, who was to do some fishing as well as help us capture the 4 lb…
Read MoreTwo weeks ago, Kathryn and I went to Apalachicola for a few days of fishing with Captain David Mangum. I fished with David last year in May, and due to how hard it was to get away from the shop during tarpon season in the Keys we shifted the days to later in the year,…
Read MoreOn Tuesday, I fished for a day with Zack Stells. Zack and I have talked for nearly a year about getting out and doing some fun fishing and it took a long time for it to finally happen. We started at a reasonable 8:00, and while the weather looked clear it was as well hot…
Read MoreIt’s finally time to get this up here, and I’m pleased to report that the 2015 Del Brown was one of the best tournaments I’ve ever had the privilege of fishing in. I’m going to go through our own fishing, with a discussion of the results and what was happening outside our own boat as…
Read MoreWith the Del Brown finished, it’s time to put everything up here on these pages. It was a truly amazing tournament, and I want to get to the results (as well as everything that happened leading up to them) up here as soon as possible. That said, I have to keep things in order on…
Read MoreLast Friday (playing catch up as always), I fished with John O’Hearn as the guest of Lawson Stiff. Our target was any of the big three, and we started off by looking for permit. The fishing slow, and while Lawson and I each got shots at a few fish it never really turned on enough…
Read MoreAfter the Gold Cup, while I posted results, I neglected to write a typical “our fishing” report. I wanted to get the results up here for those that follow these reports, and right after the tournament I was not in a head space to discuss what amounted to falling as far short of what we…
Read MoreTwo days ago, I went out for an evening excursion. My cousin James is on vacation from teaching school in Africa, and as such needed to catch a tarpon. We started at 7:30, and after a brief boat injury (I won’t go into the details here, but let’s just say that low tide can be…
