Fishing Reports
The fishing reports page has been a favorite for a while now, and we try to keep it updated regularly. For the most part, it’s a blog of Nathaniel Linville and the fishing he does with guides that he’s lucky enough to fish with though occasionally we’ll post a guest report from one of our friends on a trip they took. Good days, bad days, success and failure, they’re all here. Photos accompany the report when they’re available, but if you want straight photos the best place to look is the photo gallery.
Last night I fished with Aaron Snell. We were joined by Kathryn Vallilee, who was hoping to catch her first large tarpon. While Aaron had found many fish in a few places the night before, we were unable to find the scales we wanted and called it a night early. Tomorrow I’m headed back out…
Read MoreHere’s a few photos–the first is courtesy John O’Hearn, who put on a show with Ted Margo on the bow: The second is of the large fish Aaron and I dried off on Monday, the only fish we hooked during some picking through lean areas: Tonight I’m fishing with Aaron, hoping to pull on a…
Read MoreYesterday I fished with Aaron Snell. As much as I fish with Aaron, we hadn’t spent a day on the water in a few weeks and it was great to be out with him again. We began fishing a spot for laid up fish, and while we didn’t see many we were able to feed…
Read MoreFriday I was invited to fish with Dave Dalu and Scott Collins, two fishermen I look up to. I was happy to be spending the day with two people that had such a large impact on my own fishing aspirations. We began at 8 AM, and in very short order we had a group of…
Read MoreSunday I fished with Captain Drew Delashmit and Ted Margo. We had incredibly tough conditions, but made the best of it with our effort. We fished for 8 hours, in the clouds and the near 30 mph breeze, for a few shots. There isn’t much to say about it except thanks to Drew for sticking…
Read MoreFor the next three days, I’ll be on the water and unable to load any reports until I return. It’s unknown if there will be any photos for the next three days (and again on Friday with Dave Dalu and Scott Collins), so I figured I’d post some pictures. Aaron Snell provided the following, enjoy.…
Read MoreYesterday I fished with Howard Davis and Drew Delashmit. Our target was tarpon. We began by poling a long edge in the backcountry, looking for a few sliding creatures. I was up first and, after a slow 45 minutes, had a shot at a pair of fish that cooperated: I dried off a 70 pound…
Read MoreIt’s been an interesting three days. Kathryn Vallilee and I headed up to the IGFA to attend the awards dinner and lend some Angling Company support to Dotty Ballantyne, who received a lifetime achievement award in recognition of her capture of over 100 IGFA fly rod records. Needless to say, The Angling Company is beyond…
Read MoreYesterday I fished with Captain Chris McCreedy, and our target was tarpon. After a more-harrowing-than-normal week, between last week’s cutting off: both of Sandy and Howard and myself at Loggerhead as well as Lenny’s finger (nearly) by a shark, I decided to leave the six pound at home and throw some sixteen pound tippet at…
Read MoreWednesday I fished with Captain Lenny Leonard and my mother, Vicky. We intended to fish for sharks, and though we started by tarpon fishing we only saw a few fish in a channel and never really got a shot. In an hour, we were heading west to deploy a bonita and try our luck at…
Read MoreMonday I fished with Captain Chris McCreedy. We were coming off of a one-day cold snap the week prior, and while it was warm the fish seemed hesitant to return to the flats as they had the week before. This was most likely due to the wind, which blew a steady 20 for us all…
Read MoreMonday I fished with John O’Hearn. Aaron had a day off, and as such we decided to all go out together, throw some 16#,and catch a couple. The weather was brilliant and off we went. As it turns out, when you have two great guides (and friends), as well as great weather, the fishing doesn’t…
Read MoreFollowing my day with John and Aaron (Part ONE from the fishing reports page), Aaron and I set forth solo to capture tarpon. We were fishing on 6#, still trying after all these years. Day ONE: Aaron and I had our minds set on a large fish in the proper area for 6# capture, and…
Read MoreI apologize for the lack f reports. I was scheduled to fish on Monday and Tuesday with Aaron Snell, but we cancelled due to weather. It’s been cold, and I’ve been catching up on some much needed shop work and getting ready for three days next week-one with John O’Hearn and two with Aaron. Reports…
Read MoreThe last two days I fished in the Islamorada Sharkfly tournament with Joe Rodriguez. The Angling Company would like to congratulate Captain Rob Fordyce and his angler CJ Nelson for their victory, and Captain Steve Friedman and his angler Greg Friedman for their placement as runners up. As for my own fishing in the tournament…
Read MoreI actually posted this in error in the 2012 folder, so I’m fixing things now and posting it here: The last four days will (hopefully) be some of the hardest I’ve seen. I could go on about how tough it was (which would be a long and sad report) or talk about how the fishing…
Read MoreYesterday I fished with Captain Chris McCreedy, and the day before with Fitz Coker. Day one: Fitz and I intended to go out and catch some snapper for dinner and then try our hand at some fly poling, and we did both with great success. We limited out on grey snapper, and I caught a…
Read More…to post this report last week. Aaron and I went to the Marquesas on his new boat (a reworked Maverick 1) and caught a jack We couldn’t find any permit, so we instead caught a nice tarpon in the nighttime light on the way home: Always good to break in the skiff that I’ll be…
Read MoreWhile I was scheduled to fish Monday with Bruce Chard, we opted to reschedule and instead make up the day with a few in the fall. Tuesday I had booked Aaron Snell, and we decided that to go despite the colder weather. As an added bonus, we were able to break in his new skiff,…
Read MoreOn Tuesday, I fished with Captain Simon Becker. Simon and I have tried to fish in the past, but his (understandably) busy guiding schedule and a tournament in the middle of some planned days got in the way. Last week at the Lower Keys Guides Association meeting he mentioned to me that he had the…
