Fishing Reports V1
The fishing reports page has been a favorite for a while now, and we try to keep it updated regularly. For the most part, it’s a blog of Nathaniel Linville and the fishing he does with guides that he’s lucky enough to fish with though occasionally we’ll post a guest report from one of our friends on a trip they took. Good days, bad days, success and failure, they’re all here. Photos accompany the report when they’re available, but if you want straight photos the best place to look is the photo gallery.
After our two permit day in in Punta Gorda, we woke up on our second to rain and cloud cover. We returned to, and spent the balance of our day in, the inside spot that had given us some great shots and Michael’s second permit the day before. The water was shallow, and we decided…
Read MoreAfter our first two days in Placencia, we packed up a few day bags and headed to Punta Gorda for two days. The weather wasn’t great, and we were dealing with some difficult cloud cover throughout the day and no small amount of rain on the way over. Eworth brought us to a nifty inside…
Read MoreI figured that since I’m spending a few days writing the Belize report, it would be nice to have some Key West related reports on the site. I received the following picture from Robin Lunn, who fished with Aaron Snell last week and had a great time: Additionally, I fished for a few hours yesterday…
Read MoreAfter the slam (and some pretty great permit fishing) on the first day, we remained in Placencia for another day before we went to Punta Gorda. We all felt that good things could happen. At the first stop, I waded after a pair of tailing fish with Michael while he fished, and while the casts…
Read MoreLast night I returned from a week-long fish in Belize. My friend Michael Hetzel and I were fishing with my old friend Eworth Garbutt, and we had six days of fishing planned. Thirteen years ago, I first fished the flats in Placencia with Eworth and had a great time. Though I did not catch much…
Read MoreYesterday I had the pleasure of fishing with Captain Doug Kilpatrick. Doug has been busy with his new lodge in Wyoming (the Wapiti Lodge), and since he was back for a week in October I secured the day after the vote to fish with him. It was either going to be a very tough day…
Read MoreSo, it seems that we have a victory on our hands. The Key West Chamber of Commerce spent more than twice what we did, and they only won 25% of the popular vote. This means that, for now, the issue has been put to rest. Key West values our natural resource and our long-term visitors…
Read MoreThis morning I woke up to a phone call from Captain Mike Gorton, who had a trip booked today with anglers that didn’t show up. Since he was all set to go, he rang me up to see if I wanted to get out for a few hours. With the vote today (if you don’t…
Read MoreOn Monday and Tuesday, I fished with Will Benson. DAY ONE: We left early from parts far away, and within 20 minutes of leaving the dock we found some small tarpon to play with. I jumped one, had another bite, and as the sun crept higher we elected to leave the pons for some permit.…
Read MoreOn Tuesday, I fished with Ted Margo and Captain John O’Hearn. Here’s what happened: DAY ONE: With the clouds in full effect, we decided to start early and look for some small tarpon. In the rain, we found a number of small tarpon. I caught the first one we hooked, and then we had to…
Read MoreLeading up to the Superfly, I fished with Justin Rea for two days. We started on Tuesday, and here’s what happened: DAY ONE: We started early, and Justin had tarpon and bonefish on the brain. He found a school of small tarpon early, and while they didn’t show at first they woke up as the…
Read MoreAfter the two days with Justin, I had Aaron booked for the Superfly tournament and the day before. This is the report from the day before the tournament. We started in the morning, early to look for tarpon. While we met at the dock at 6, after I forgot something at home and Aaron forgot…
Read MoreAfter the last two days of fishing, each with a permit and one with a slam, it was either a great or a terrible way to walk into the Superfly. We had momentum, to be sure, but there was a distinctive possibility that we’d used up all of our mojo. Either way, off we went.…
Read MoreAfter the day with John and Thom, I spent a day on the water with Justin Rea. Given the cloud cover the day before, I was hoping for a visibility break. This looked like it was about to happen, until a giant storm blew up south of us and blotted out the sun for the…
Read MoreMonday I fished with John O’Hearn. Joining us was Thomas Rapone, down for a few days from his Boston Legal Lair. The day began covered in clouds. I am reminded that just the other day I was involved in a correspondence with Howard Davis, wherein he mentioned that the weather has seemed, based on the…
Read MoreOn Monday and Tuesday I fished with Bruce Chard. He had a photographer friend in town, and our plan was to get some pictures of fishing in August for Bruce’s upcoming book. In the spirit of keeping things (painfully) real, events transpired to keep it challenging. The first, an ongoing chemical burn that I was…
Read MoreHere’s some photo candy: Tomorrow and the next with Bruce Chard, reports to follow. ncl
Read MoreOn Monday and Tuesday, I fished the park with Joe Rodriguez. Our target was the 6 lb tippet tarpon record. For the second day we were joined by Aaron Snell. DAY ONE: We elected to leave later than dawn, as there was a fair amount of wind. It’s worth noting that “leaving late” in this…
Read MoreI was scheduled to fish with Justin Rea for two days–yesterday and the day before. Joining me was Frankie Marion, who intended to get some footage of permit fishing. While we got out the first day, the second was a wash as the weather moved in, but I managed to spend some time fishing from…
Read MoreLast week, in the middle of a move, I fished with John O’Hearn for two days. DAY ONE: We started at 7:30, and our target was permit. It didn’t take John long to get us to our first stop, and it didn’t take us much time to figure out that the fish were there. In…
