This is a pristine 8550C with the tarpon spool, RH wind. It has been filled with backing (removed by us for this sale) and appears never to have been mounted on a rod. Its condition is a minimal click below what it would be if it had sat in its case and box since its construction.

There are very few reels that come across our desk that we haven’t seen before. One of these is this beautiful 8400 1.6 in a rare satin-matte finish. Made without the Charlton crest that adorned all reels except those that bore the signature of the buyer, the effect is elegant and understated on such a rare size and finish.

The Elite series reels were produced concurrently, though briefly, with the Thinn-line Elite Series reels. The predecessor the Signature Series, their run was brief and featured a beautiful matte finish as standard.

This reel comes from a private collection, and has been barely used. Once lined but not fished, the reel shows hardly any evidence of ever being on a boat or stream. There is some light rust spots in the Charlton crest on the spool release dial, though elsewhere it’s hard to find any mark at all.

This is a great example of a reel that has been well cared for. The 8550C was one of the more popular of the Signature Series, and the tarpon spool was likely the most widely produced.

This is a very rare spool, in a very rare finish. There weren’t many Signature Series reels made in the matte finish, to begin with, and probably very few spools featured this gorgeous addition. This reel appears unused, and we’ve looked very closely for any sign of wear.

This 8550C comes with two spools: the ever popular tarpon spool as well as the tarpon spool. Both show signs of use, though both have been impeccably cared for. There are no marks on the frame that we can find, and only a tiny (and we do mean tiny) mark on the edge of the Spey spool.

The 8500 .8 and 1.2 were popular reels, though the former was made in quantities much larger than the latter. The 1.6 was the scarce cousin of these two reels and was made in truly low numbers.
