Fishing Reports

The fishing reports page has been a favorite for a while now, and we try to keep it updated regularly. For the most part, it’s a blog of Nathaniel Linville and the fishing he does with guides that he’s lucky enough to fish with though occasionally we’ll post a guest report from one of our friends on a trip they took. Good days, bad days, success and failure, they’re all here. Photos accompany the report when they’re available, but if you want straight photos the best place to look is the photo gallery.

Solstice fishing with William and Aaron

December 22, 2011 Comments Off on Solstice fishing with William and Aaron

Yesterday I decided to fish with Captain Will Benson, and we were joined by Aaron Snell. The day began late (due mostly to the shortest of days), but we managed to have a great shot right off the bat. The fish followed it and seemed interested, but did not commit. We had a few more…

New lines

December 15, 2011 Comments Off on New lines

I’ve been saying for a while now that one major gap in our arsenal down here has been the lack of a floating line with a clear tip. Airflo finally did it, and we’re very happy with the results. We now have 8-12 weight lines in both all clear as well as the new clear-tip…

When I asked Lenny to provide a fishing report, I got something (a few things, actually) that were definitely worth sharing here. Here is part of the text conversation: Here are some photos: Hope that helps! ncl/tac

Weather

December 7, 2011 Comments Off on Weather

Today and yesterday looked beautiful, and I hear that the water is warming up. Reports have come in of permit and bonefish (the tarpon seem to still be absent from the basins), as well as barracuda and large jacks. I’ve been occupied for a few days, but I’ll try to get some photos up soon…

Cold fronts and coffee

December 3, 2011 Comments Off on Cold fronts and coffee

It’s officially winter; a cold front finally chilled things down for more than a day. We re-upped our espresso supply; feel free to stop by for one (incidentally, we have no sugar so if you want that better bring your own). It’s windy and cold out there, which means very little is going on. I…

Happy Thanksgiving, report from yesterday

November 24, 2011 Comments Off on Happy Thanksgiving, report from yesterday

Happy Thanksgiving. Yesterday I fished in the Everglades with Captain Joe Rodriguez. We left his house at 5:00 and were on the water in Islamorada by 6:45. We ran to the Everglades (this is becoming a rather common occurrence as I look harder and harder for the six) and were fishing by 7:45. The weather…

Fishing in the Everglades

November 17, 2011 Comments Off on Fishing in the Everglades

Yesterday I headed up to the Everglades to fish with Captain Joe Rodriguez. We had a small window of opportunity to look for the six, so we decided to take it. We left Summerland at 5 am and drove to Islamorada, where we were on the water heading for the glades at 6:45. At our…

Fishing and a photo

November 8, 2011 Comments Off on Fishing and a photo

I spoke with a few other people who were on teh water yesterday; one boat caught a permit, another had a few more shots than we did but everyone agreed it was far from stellar. In case anyone forgot what they look like, Lenny Leonard sent me this photo: I may be fishing tomorrow morning;…

Report from the flats

November 7, 2011 Comments Off on Report from the flats

Today I fished for about 6 hours with Capt. Ray Vasquez. We had great visibility, and the tides looked good. We had a new fly that John O’Hearn had given me that I was eager to try and it was blowing 15–all perfect indicators of good permit fishing. We started west of Key West and…

Channel Widening, not now….hopefully not ever

November 3, 2011 Comments Off on Channel Widening, not now….hopefully not ever

There has been a lot of discussion lately about widening the Key West Channel in order to accommodate bigger cruise ships. Beyond a personal feeling that I would rather have fish than large vessels and the attendant passengers they transport in our channel, I agree with the majority of residents here: we have enough cruise…

Wind

October 16, 2011 Comments Off on Wind

The fishing has been put on hold for the last few days, and the wind has taken over. Looking forward to blackfin soon, as well as sailfish and a planned trip 70 miles west of Key West for african pompano on fly. This weather should be over soon, and the permit are the likely headline…

Everglades with Andy Thompson and Aaron Snell: Part 1

October 13, 2011 Comments Off on Everglades with Andy Thompson and Aaron Snell: Part 1

The 6 lb record didn’t happen. Here’s an account (with pictures) of what did: We met Andy at the ramp in Islamorada at 6:30 and were on our way to the Everglades by 6:45. The weather was beautiful and the water was glass calm. A quick run and we were fishing. We didn’t see what…

Everglades with Aaron and Andy: Part 2

October 13, 2011 Comments Off on Everglades with Aaron and Andy: Part 2

We arrived at our next stop and didn’t find the fish immediately. Andy pulled out his binoculars, and in short order spotted a few groups of happy rollers in the distance, so we fired up the motor and headed over that way to capture them. Incidentally, I noticed something about binoculars–I feel like they add…

Everglades with Andy and Aaron: Part 3

October 13, 2011 Comments Off on Everglades with Andy and Aaron: Part 3

Here are more pictures of the many fish we jumped, trying to find one that was big enough: After a few hours and many class tippets, we made a move to another area and tried to find some more sliders. On to Part 4…

Everglades with Andy and Aaron: Part 4

October 13, 2011 Comments Off on Everglades with Andy and Aaron: Part 4

So we left the great masses of rollers and looked for some shallow sliders. We found a fish relatively quickly, and it looked big enough. One cast and an eat, one jump, and I reeled in the slack to see a class tippet that was chewed through. My guess is that the fish was hooked…

A New Tarpon Record by Thane Morgan and Dustin Huff….

October 13, 2011 Comments Off on A New Tarpon Record by Thane Morgan and Dustin Huff….

My phone started making lots of noise this afternoon. It seems that this morning angler Thane Morgan and Captain Dustin Huff caught a very large tarpon on 4 lb. What I hear is this: they hooked the fish at 4 pm yesterday and boated it at 10 this morning–not that anyone reading this needs the…

Fishing tomorrow in the Everglades

October 11, 2011 Comments Off on Fishing tomorrow in the Everglades

This afternoon, Aaron and I will drive to Islamorada. We will get a hotel room, tour the dark taverns, and eat fried food. Tomorrow we will wake up early, meet Andy at the ramp. We will run to the Everglades as the sun is rising, and it will be warm. There won’t be much wind,…
