Fishing Reports V1
The fishing reports page has been a favorite for a while now, and we try to keep it updated regularly. For the most part, it’s a blog of Nathaniel Linville and the fishing he does with guides that he’s lucky enough to fish with though occasionally we’ll post a guest report from one of our friends on a trip they took. Good days, bad days, success and failure, they’re all here. Photos accompany the report when they’re available, but if you want straight photos the best place to look is the photo gallery.
So the tarpon fishing is still going on, and the fish are here. The calm weather, however, can make the approach difficult at times. Most importantly, however, congratulations are due to Max Willard, who landed his first tarpon on fly last night. When Scott and Max come by I will try to get some photographs…
For the last few days, the wind has been 8-12 mph, a distinct change from the days earlier in the week that made for less than thrilling fishing on Sunday and Monday. Fish are still arriving, though it seems we may be in between large pushes. Of course, this may change (or have changed) today,…
On Saturday we left the dock by 9 AM and had hooked a fish by 9:45. Light wind, clear sky; fishing in pretty limited areas (due to our plan of catching the 6 lb record) we had hooked four fish before 3 PM. Actually, it is worth noting that one of these four fish, the…
Mail Lady: Do you know that today is Star Wars day? Us: No, we didn’t. Really? Mail Lady: Yes! May the Fourth be with you! Lol…. ncl/TAC
The title say says it all: the forecast calls for the wind to increase this weekend to maybe 15 mph in the afternoon on Saturday (tomorrow). Today, it seems, is the day before the blow and as such should bring some great fishing. We leave early tomorrow morning for 3 days of fishing, and if…
After work last night, I had an opportunity to tarpon fish with Captains Aaron Snell and Lenny Leonard, in what will most likely be their last opportunity to do some friends fishing before the onslaught of work in May. The wind was blowing more than we had anticipated, and the fish weren’t showing on the…
The wind has subsided, and the tarpon have moved into the first stages of their pass by the lower Keys. There are still some fish out back, yet all the fish are beginning to be tough customers. It seems that when the wind dies and the clouds go away, the tarpon are that much more…
The wind continues to blow, though it is tapering down. It looks like Monday and Tuesday (and hopefully later in the week also) will get even better. I want to remind everyone that there are some large fish around, like this one caught by Adam Corsi fishing with Captain Aaron Snell. According to Aaron, Adam’s…
The wind keeps blowing, and it looks like the fishing is starting to feel the effects. That said, the fishing is still happening and tarpon are beginning to run the ocean–great news for all of us waiting for our first shots at the inevitable hordes of fish that roll by us every year. The wind…
The tarpon fishing is phenomenal, and there is wind. Between making the fish difficult to see and complicating the cast, the 12-15 knots of wind we are experiencing can mean the difference between hooking a few fish and watching them swim under (or behind) your leader, never seeing the fly. That said, the fish are…
The fishing yesterday was great. I was invited to fish alongside Howard “stone-cold tarpon killer” Davis with Captain Jacob Shemper, and we certainly did get it done. The fishing wasn’t transcendental, though we did manage to hook some fish. Early on, I hooked a fish behind the boat on a sight cast that became a…
First (and right and just) things first, it would be irresponsible for me not to share this link to a video that James Linville sent me. Most importantly: When can I go do this? http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v=WK2LpUoqX6A&vq=medium Second, as much as I wish that every day on the water would be amazing, I must confess that tarpon…
The Angling Company would like to pass our great respect on to Billy Pate, who passed away this morning. Billy was a sportsman, a businessman, and an angler, and as such did more to promote the sport of fly fising in salt water than anyone could hope to. His videos, delivered in his trademark Carolina…
While the tarpon fishing remains incredible, and as such is attracting most of the attention of our guides and anglers, the bonefish have been arriving in ever-greater numbers. Of course, there are a million tarpon-shaped reasons to be out there, but bonefish can offer a different experience that while “smaller” is no less thrilling. Good…
Yes, it’s good. Last night we fished with Captain Aaron Snell–Jim and Vicky Linville, Fitz Coker, and Dotty Ballantyne. While we didn’t see a large number of fish, we still managed to hook three large fish and bring two to the boat for a leader-in-the-tip release. Jim had a very large fish eat his fly…
Monday night, Vicky and I had a pretty incredible few hours of tarpon fishing at night with Captain Lenny Leonard. We found a few fish early, and the bite turned on as the lights went out. We hooked about 20 fish and, as is often typical of fish at night, they proved to be difficult…
Tonight I’m fishing with my mother, Vicky Linville, with Captain Lenny Leonard. We hope to find some evening/nighttime fish in the channels and get Ma Linville a fish. Tomorrow I meet Captain Paul Dixon at the shop at 7, and we have a day set aside to do some work on the 3 kg (6…
The tarpon fishing remains phenomenal, with a great many large fish in the back country. For the moment, at least, the fish seem to be uneducated and easy to feed. Here’s to getting out there! NCL/TAC
The tarpon fishing turned on this afternoon. I had the opportunity to speak with a few captains in the last hour or so, and all said the same thing: that the tarpon fishing was tough (relatively) in the morning, and that the bite turned on later. And this gives me an opportunity to point out…
At the risk of sounding redundant, there are and have been a lot of tarpon around. So many, in fact, that people are forgetting about the great bonefish fishing (I would say “bonefishing”, but I am unconvinced of the grammatical propriety (existence?) of this word. Incidentally, if you have any thoughts on this I would…
