Fishing Reports
The fishing reports page has been a favorite for a while now, and we try to keep it updated regularly. For the most part, it’s a blog of Nathaniel Linville and the fishing he does with guides that he’s lucky enough to fish with though occasionally we’ll post a guest report from one of our friends on a trip they took. Good days, bad days, success and failure, they’re all here. Photos accompany the report when they’re available, but if you want straight photos the best place to look is the photo gallery.
Earlier in the week I fished with John O’Hearn and we were joined by Chad “Chadillac 305” Huff. Chad’s been honing his permit blade ever since getting his first (and second, in a wade-off win) with John and me in August, and we were hoping that this trip was going to be a chance at…
Read MoreOn Tuesday I again got out with Ian Slater for a day of Merkin preparation. We’ve had a good run together recently, an as there’s nothing quite as nice as momentum we welcomed the chance to do it again. The weather was nice but incredibly calm and we figured we would have to wade if…
Read MoreAfter the Cuda Bowl I’ve decided to devote the balance of my efforts to permit fishing leading up to the March Merkin. Ian and I had a few days off together, and hatched a plan to get out and permit fish. We had some decent weather, and though there haven’t been tons of permit around…
Read MoreThe Cuda Bowl finished up last week, and as usual I fished with John Benvenuto. We were joined by Kat, who I was happy to have on our team (even though we would technically be competing against one another). John and I have had a great run in the tournament over the years, and fishing…
Read MoreIn the middle of last week I traveled again to Everglades City in pursuit of the 6 with Steve Huff. Chad came along to assist with the last 8 feet if needed, and together we formed a team of children poorly disguised as fisherman. On the Sunday leading up to our scheduled days a wicked…
Read MoreI’m well aware that since I returned from New Zealand these reports have suffered. In an attempt to start with the ongoing updates, I’m going to give a quick rundown of what’s been going on since New Zealand, then a more in-depth report of fishing with Steve and Chad Huff in the next day or…
Read MoreHi party people, it’s me, Kat. Below are some cool photos from our New Zealand trip. With 12 days worth of awesome trout fishing, we figured it’d be best not to go through every detail. I have to mention the guides that made it all possible: Paul McDonald, Derek Nees, and Sean Andrews (From…
Read MoreI left off on these reports when I was getting ready to leave for Nez Troutland, and though I intended to finish out the fishing I had done until our departure I was unable to do so. I’ll be brief (probably because of the jet lag). Ian and I took the Monday after our last…
Read MoreAt the end of last week, I spent a day on the water with Ian Slater. The fishing hadn’t been great for Ian the days leading up to our trip, so we discussed a new plan that involved us going to some places we don’t fish very often. We hoped for a permit, but in…
Read MoreAfter a great many months of discussion regarding an offshore trip together, Chris Trosset and I finally made it happen this week. We were joined by Ryan Shapiro, a friend of Chris’ that owns the Thirsty Mermaid. Our target was a wahoo on fly, which has been on my list of like-tos for a while.…
Read MoreLast week, I fished with Steve Huff. If you’re familiar with these reports you know what we were trying to do: catch the 6. The pursuit of this record has brought me to places and with people that I am lucky to be around. It has also tested every bit of my mental and physical…
Read MoreEarlier in the week I spent a morning on the water with Ian Slater. Joining us was Jake from Bonefish Tarpon Trust, who has been working on implanting acoustic tags in permit to track their movements through an array of receivers placed throughout the lower Keys. Had we been serious about catching a permit it…
Read MoreOn Saturday the Sugarloaf Showdown came to a close. This was the tournament’s third year, and there were 15 boats competing. The rules are designed to have both spin and fly fishing count toward each team’s total, with a points premium being placed on the fly-caught fish and a total number of species premium conferring…
Read MoreAt the moment, I haven’t been fishing much. John Benvenuto and I went out for a day of exploration on Monday, and we had a great time. We fished some new pieces of water that we’ve been meaning to look at in the Cuda Bowl, and while we found the bottom and depth we were…
Read MoreOn Tuesday I fished with Ian Slater for a half day before he had to get to work. Joining us was Michael Hetzel, who has been staying with Kat and myself for the last week. While we had made a brief foray into the dock lights for baby tarpon a few nights ago, this was the…
Read MoreLast Tuesday I fished for a few hours in the morning with Ian Slater. Ian had to leave the water early for a shift at the shop, so we made a half day out of the morning. The permit fishing has been good, if windy, and as such we spent our time looking for a…

Read MoreAt the beginning of last week, I fished with Ian Slater on Monday and John O’Hearn as Ted Margo’s guest on Tuesday. With Ian on Monday we only fished a half day in the morning, looking for permit. At our first stop of the morning Ian found a few tails nearby a flat, suspended in…
Read MoreA week ago, Kat and I returned from Belize for our annual trip with Eworth Garbutt in Belize. Our goal was to permit fish, turn off the phones, and spend some time on the water together. Further, Kat and I had been talking about the possibility of her throwing some light stuff at the fish.…
Read MoreIt’s been a great week of traveling and fishing in Belize with Kat and Eworth Garbutt. As we’ve done the last few years, we took a week away from the shop and made it down to spend some time permit fishing in new waters with and old friend. I have much to report from the…
